Jaws is a recurring enemy from the Sonic the Hedgehog video game series. It is an aquatic-based Badnik created by Dr. Eggman that can be found patrolling underwater sections of various stages.
Overview[]
Jaws is one of Dr. Eggman's earliest submersible Badnik models. Based on a real-life shark, it swims through deep waters via a propeller attached to its tail. It attacks by biting its targets with powerful jaws.
Video game appearances[]
Sonic the Hedgehog (1991)[]
Jaws can be encountered in the Labyrinth Zone in both the 16-bit version and 8-bit version of Sonic 1. It travels slowly from side to side, continuously snapping its jaws. It poses little threat and Sonic can easily destroy it with a single spin jump.
Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I[]
Jaws reappears with an upgraded design, appearing more mechanical with clear seams between the parts of its body. Beyond the cosmetic differences, nothing else has really changed and they behave in the same manner as they did in Sonic 1. They can be seen in Lost Labyrinth Zone.
Sonic Lost World[]
Returning in the WiiU/PC version of Sonic Lost World, Jaws Badniks behave a bit differently compared to their previous appearances. Encountered in Tropical Coast, Jaws are usually deployed by Blowfish Transporters and swim fairly slowly until they catch sight of Sonic. When Sonic is in sight, Jaws will pick up speed and charge in Sonic's direction. It cannot change course, however, so if Sonic gets out of its way it will keep going until it crashes into an obstacle and destroys itself.

Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog[]
In the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon, Jaws are shark-based Badniks created by Dr. Robotnik. Appearing in just one episode, they closely resemble their game counterparts, except that they have red-coloured bodies instead of being pink and also carry lances for skewering their targets. In another episode, Scratch and Grounder operated a submarine resembling Jaws while pursuing Sonic and Tails across the ocean.
Archie Comics[]
In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, the Jaws was one of the classic Badniks created by Dr. Ivo Robotnik. In the comics' early run, the Jaws served as Robotnik's foremost lackey in his underwater operations. However, he was eventually rendered obsolete by more advanced robots and got decommissioned.
